Mysterious City On the Water - Visit Venice And Its Architectural Beauty

in #travel7 years ago

Venice is a example of architecture development over the middle ages has a lot to offer to its visitors. It is the ancient city built on the swamps in the Venetian lagoon and a home to one of the most magnificent architectural pieces on this planet. Beside the island of Venice there are several islands the lagoon named Murano, Burano and Torcelo which are also worth visiting. In the summer time one can also go for a swim in the sea at the island of Lido although water is not very clean around Venice lagoon but still good enough for swimming.

If you are planning on visiting Venice in summer be prepared for a very crowded vacation. Venice is jam packed from may to October. If you are a photographer and would like to get some nice images of Venice without crowds you might consider visiting Venice outside of the main season. Visiting in November or December would be good in this case because it is not very cold yet and if you are lucky you might catch Venice during aqua alta or as we would call it floods.

Things to see in Venice

San Marco Square

This is the most visited and important square in Venice. San Marco Square and the buildings that surround it were built to to show off the wealth of Venice and impress the dignitaries that came to Venice in the past. On this square you can find Doge´s Palace, Basilica of San Marco, plenty of luxury restaurants, cafes, hotels and shops. You can also find famous Florian cafe where Casanova, Lord Byron, Goethe and many other famous people used to have their morning coffee. If you happen to be at this square during winter time you might catch it during floods.

Rialto bridge

Rialto bridge is an architectural masterpiece and a busy crossing point for tourists and Venetians throughout the whole day. Its stone structure was built in 16. century. It is one of the few bridges that links both sides of the Grand Canal and a must see bridge for everyone who decides to visit Venice.

View from Academia bridge

View from academia bridge is one of the most breathtaking sights one might come by in Venice. Academia bridge is located 5 minutes walk from San Marco square or two stops with Venice Water buses called Vaporettos. From this bridge you can get a good view of the Grand Canal. It is a spot to be at, for photographer that decides to visit Venice.

Venetian gondolas

One of the greatest experiences for everyone who goes to visit Venice is to take a ride with a Venetian gondola. The 20 minute ride will cost you around 50$, but you will experience the ride through small Venetian canals like it is meant to be.

Doge´s Palace

Doge´s Palace was through the Venetian history the seat of the government and the place where the Dodge had his home. The inner part of the palace is covered with stunning works of art. The Palace was made to impress the important visitors and dignitaries that visited the Dodge. To get in you will have to pay admission but if you value the works of art it will be worth all the money spent. It is located at the Piazza San Marco.

Transportation in Venice

The main of transportation in Venice is by vaporetto. They are the water buses that transport visitors and citizens around Venice. In Venice there are no roads and no cars which means you will have to buy a vaporetto ticket for the number of days you will be staying in Venice to be able to get around. You can also walk around Venice but after a long day of sightseeing you will see that walking can be quite exhausting. The price for 48 hour vaporetto ticket will cost you around 30€.

Venice is a great place for shopping. On the island of Murano they manufacture their original Murano glass from which they make rings, cups, necklaces and many other products which I guarantee you will find fascinating. They also sell very nice souvenirs such as Venetian masks, Italian fashion clothes, books and much more.
