New Solar Panels to Generate Electricity From Raindrops Too

in #technology8 years ago

Sunlight is one of the rich source of energy that can be used to generate electricity by the use of solar panels. But the biggest problem with the conventional solar panels is that they only work when there is sunlight. But typically that doesn’t happen. How can we use solar panels during rainy or cloudy days? Well, there is a new Graphene coated solar panels are available that overcomes this limitation. These new panels are capable of generating energy even in rainy days and generates electricity when rain drops comes in contact with the panel.

This great Solar panel is developed by a scientists team from China. They have developed a solar cell prototype that will generate electricity like a conventional solar panel even in rainy days. The only difference is in its build material. It consists of a thick layer of graphene across its surface allowing it to convert raindrops into usable power.

How does it work?

This new solar panel designed works like a conventional solar panel when there is to generate electricity from sunlight. The actual use of graphene coating comes in when there is no sunlight and raining, the graphene separates the Ammonium, Calcium and Sodium ions in the rain from water. These ions gets tightly attached to graphene electrons and resulting into a pseudo capacitor having a potential difference between the layers and resulting in the production of electricity.
The biggest drawback of these panels is that scientists have only managed to get only an efficiency of 7% as compared to the 20% in conventional solar panels. But we are looking at the potential future for a greener world and better world.

I didn't know about this.

Thank you for reading!

Another problem is that graphene is pretty hard to mass produce so you would have really expensive panels with less than half of the efficiency. Studying graphene technologies shouldn't stop though.

Yeh! But it will flourish and advance with time :)

I am glad you liked it :)
