Lagerstroemia subcostata: A Beautiful and Culturally Significant Tree
Lagerstroemia subcostata, commonly known as the Taiwan crepe myrtle or Japanese crepe myrtle, is a deciduous tree or shrub belonging to the Lythraceae family. It is widely known for its aesthetic appeal, with delicate flowers and smooth bark that make it a popular ornamental plant in many regions. However, beyond its beauty, this species is also rich in cultural, ecological, and botanical significance.
Botanical Description Lagerstroemia subcostata is typically found in East Asia, including Taiwan, Japan, and parts of China. It is a medium-sized tree, often reaching a height of around 5 to 10 meters. In its native environment, it thrives in subtropical and warm temperate regions, where it forms part of mixed forests or grows in the wild along mountain slopes.
Leaves The leaves of Lagerstroemia subcostata are simple, elliptic to oblong in shape, and measure between 5 to 10 cm long. They are usually dark green during the growing season but turn yellow or reddish-brown in autumn before falling. The leaf margins are slightly serrated, and the leaves are arranged in an opposite or whorled pattern along the branches.
Flowers The tree is most celebrated for its striking flowers, which bloom during the summer. The flowers are typically pink, purple, or white, with crinkled, crepe-like petals—hence the common name "crepe myrtle." These blooms grow in terminal panicles that can be quite large, adding a showy display to gardens or landscapes. The blooming season can last several weeks, providing a prolonged period of visual interest.
Bark One of the distinctive features of Lagerstroemia subcostata is its smooth, peeling bark. As the tree matures, the bark exfoliates in thin patches, revealing a patchwork of colors ranging from brown to gray and pinkish hues. This unique bark provides year-round visual interest, particularly in winter when the tree is leafless.
