[ENG-SPN] A lighthouse from other times / Un faro de otros tiempos

For centuries, it was a prodigious work, whose masterful presence could be seen kilometers away, serving, at the same time, as a reference beacon for all those travelers who were heading towards the portentous city of Cesaraugusta: the one, which, settled at the bank of the Ebro, today we know it as Zaragoza. The fortunate Zaragoza, where, according to tradition, one of the first Marian manifestations of the Iberian Peninsula took place, when the Virgin appeared on a pillar to a troubled Apostle Santiago, whose evangelical message was unable to penetrate the hearts of the Hispanics of the time and that, as a demonstration of the turns that life takes, Santiago was later elevated to the altars of the patronage of what is now our nation, being, on the other hand, the invocation of the Virgin of this apparition, that of Pilar, one of the most revered, loved and respected in Spain.

Dating from the 3rd century after Christ, the Roman Arch of that thousand-year-old Madinat al Salim or City of Heaven, where the palace where the daughters of El Cid stayed overnight before meeting him after the conquest of Valencia still stands, is another monumental inheritance of the genius and precision of Roman architecture and engineering, which had one of its greatest exponents in the figure of Vitruvius, whose treatises were followed, surprising as it may seem, in Spanish architectural schools until modern times. Elevated on a hill, at the entrance to the historic center of the city, it seems to do silent justice to some verses by Antonio Machado, barely preserved in front of an old house converted into a restaurant, contemplating, with that melancholic arrogance that always bestows immortality, 'the leaden plains and the silvery hills, surrounded by violet mountains, with the peaks of rosy snow...'.

Durante siglos, fue una obra prodigiosa, cuya magistral prestancia se veía a kilómetros de distancia, sirviendo, a la vez, como un faro de referencia para todos aquellos viajeros que se dirigían hacia la portentosa ciudad de Cesaraugusta: aquella, que, asentada a la orilla del Ebro, hoy en día conocemos como Zaragoza. La afortunada Zaragoza, donde, según afirma la tradición, se produjo una de las primeras manifestaciones Marianas de la Península Ibérica, cuando la Virgen se le apareció sobre un pilar a un atribulado Apóstol Santiago, cuyo mensaje evangélico no conseguía penetrar en el corazón de los hispanos de la época y que, como demostración de las vueltas que da la vida, con posterioridad Santiago fue elevado a los altares del patronazgo de lo que hoy es nuestra nación, siendo, por otro lado, la advocación de la Virgen de esta aparición, la del Pilar, una de las más veneradas, queridas y respetadas de España.

Datado en el siglo III después de Cristo, el Arco romano de esa milenaria Madinat al Salim o Ciudad del Cielo, donde todavía continúa en pie el palacete donde pernoctaron las hijas del Cid antes de reunirse con él, tras la conquista de Valencia, es otra herencia monumental del genio y precisión de la arquitectura y de la ingeniería romanas, que tuvo a uno de sus máximos exponentes en la figura de Vitrubio, cuyos tratados fueron seguidos, por asombroso que parezca, en las escuelas arquitectónicas españolas hasta tiempos modernos. Elevado sobre un cerro, a la entrada del casco histórico de la ciudad, parece hacer silenciosa justicia a unos versos de Antonio Machado, conservados a duras penas en el frontal de una vieja casona reconvertida en restaurante, contemplando, con esa melancólica soberbia que otorga siempre la inmortalidad, ‘los llanos plomizos y las lomas plateadas, circuidos por montes de violeta, con las cumbres de nieve sonrosada…’.
