Final Coumeenoole-1.jpg

Taken at Coumeenoole beach on the amazing Dingle Peninsula. The area is famous for its dramatic coastline and wonderful villages, not least the picturesque, bustling fishing town of Dingle. The Islands in the background are the Blasket Islands, which were inhabited until 1953. Before the depopulation of the islands, their habitents were the subjects of many linguistic studies. One famous such islander was Peig Sayers, who wrote an autobiography "Peig", the bain of many an Irish student's school-days.

Really great shot, perfect exposure and good light!!

Thanks, Asgarth!

Why has depopulation occurred? Is extinction the reason? And a magnificent photo :)

Hey Mystic. Unfortunately, the government decided take everyone from the island due to the declining population (young people leaving) and, due to the harsh nature of the conditions on the island, it wasn't safe for the aging population.

Thanks! :)

Thank you for the answer. :-D

I could drive the Slea Head Drive in circles forever and still not get bored with that scenery! Thanks again for your photo! I was pretty impressed with myself that I thought I recognised it before reading the text ;)

Yes! That's the spot. Nice shot, r00sj3. The whole Dingle Peninsula is gorgeous.

Yeah, I didn't really expect that beforehand. My Dingle blog

Hey, it's awfully quiet here. Hope you didn't leave!
