Mono Lake, Eastern Sierras

Sun Dogs aren't rare, I seem them often enough in the skies. But, it's rare to see them this low on the ground. A Sun Dog is a halo that appears from a refraction of ice crystals in the atmosphere. It's sort of like peering into a prism where the sunlight various waves of color are scattered.

In ancient times, Sun Dogs were also called Weather Dogs said to be partial segments of a rainbow observed over the horizon which foretold foul weather. Lucky for me I run into foul weather after shooting this scene...

Have you seen a Sun Dog?

TIL what a sun dog is. Very beautiful

LOL, a dog in the sun?

One Summer day over 35 years ago, I and my father were at the shores of Mono Lake. We saw the brine flies all around and my father inadvertently fell in quick sand on one side of his body. It was so difficult for my Dad to remove his foot that he removed his socked foot from the shoe, pulled it out and then yelled: :Here is for Mono Lake as threw it several feet (16 meters or so from the shore). That's a fun memory. It wasn't Winter when we were there though.

I've been to Mono dozens and dozens of times, never had encountered quicksand! That's crazy :)

I was 13 or something but it is true. He could barley get his shoe out and when he did, it was covered with mud that smelled to high heaven.

Wonderful

how do you do that ? is it real?

Photography is very good

a very beautiful lake.
