Why Entertainers Make More Than Teachers

I hated high school.

I ditched most of my classes, got kicked out more times than I can remember, and even got the cops called on me a few times.
I hated high school.

I hated the teachers. I hated the propaganda. I hated the conformity. But I did like one of my teachers.

His name was Mr. Stevens. He taught biology and earth science, and he made learning a blast. These should have been the most boring classes in the world for me at the time, but he always had me on the edge of my seat. And not just me. He had this effect on the entire class.

He always had a way of making the lessons entertaining.

He told stories, preformed experiments, set things on fire. One day, he even triggered the alarm with one of his shenanigans, emptying half of the school out into the football field.

He maybe only made a teachers salary, but we all paid him our full attention. And he's the only teacher I can say that about.
Entertainers make way more than educators do.

I hear so many people complain about this. But it's just a fact of human nature. We're willing to give more to those who entertain us than we are to those who educate us. And those who educate us, will do way better if they also entertain us.

So powerful is the need to be entertained that despots throughout history have used it to pacify while they subjugate. The Romans staved off revolutions by merely offering bread and circuses. The modern era of "News" is much the same.

Keep people entertained, and they will suffer almost any oppression you lay down upon them. And if we're being honest, a majority of the marketing out there is pretty oppressive.

If you want someone to take an action, you got to get them to the end of your message. Even if you provide informational content as a way to pull people in, you can't bore them into buying. You have to be entertaining.

Persuasion and information isn't enough. In order for either of those to do their job, entertainment has to pull your reader in.

This is the problem I see in most people's messaging. It's like the boring science class that high school kids fall asleep in. You want them to pay attention? Sometimes you gotta set some stuff on fire.
