Ok Steemit, it's hot folks. Temps are very much into the mid to upper 90s and it's getting hot inside the house. These are the dog days of summer and this is when a person's mettle is tested off grid. It doesn't last long. A few months and then temps usually subside and head towards the fall season.

But there are casualties and this week we had a BIG ONE! Our Internet Router!

Last week it started overheating and the internet would stop working. I went in to check on it and it was very hot. I would unplug it and let it cool down a bit before running it again and all would be fine until the heat of the next day would be at its worse, then I would have to repeat. We have replaced a few routers because of living off grid and high summer temperatures. Computers seem to do ok but routers seem to be a bit more delicate with surrounding heat.

So it was time to replace it.

I thought I would bring you along also for check on the garden and sugar cane field. There is lots of yummy produce to eat this time of the year.

Nice Zach! How in the world do you harvest so much sorgem/cane? And do you really use that much? Safe travels for you guys! Shalom!

We got some amazing news on our way to Texas...can't wait to share it....our cane may soon become a cash crop for a distillery! YAY!

Zac when going through the thick crops, maybe snake chaps could be helpfull. That will give you some time to give those snakes some snake shot lunch. Good looking garden.

I just throw on the mucks...don't think they can bite thru that...at least I hope not.

Heat and modified sine are both hard on equipment that have passive cooling. Good air circulation. We have been experiencing 35 to 40 degrees here. Even the Android equipment are acting up. If the heat an drought keeps going I will have to feed to keep the bees off the corn in an attempt to prevent ccd.

Just an idea, but you could use the case fan out of your old desktop tower to dissipate some of the heat from your router. That would be efficient enough to run on a fairly small solar panel and be quiet enough you wouldn't notice it.
I actually keep mine on a laptop cooler just to increase it's lifespan.

I was thinking this as well. I used a tiny little solar panel to run a case fan attached to my rabbits cages for when it got really hot and sunny.

Or, at least set something underneath it so it gets good air flow all around it. That would help out a lot I would think.

open the case up and put a heatsink on the board. Should be all that's needed to keep it running cooler.

I work in the IT field.I troubleshoot exactly the issues you have with heat and your equipment. Lucky for you, over the past several years I have had a growing interest in homesteading and off grid living. I cam across this idea on how to cool a structure passively. I guess the best way to describe it is thermal venting.

You will need several parts to make it work.

  1. Some kind of adjustable vent near the roof of the structure.
  2. Burry a 8" diamiter PVC pipe, make it maybe 100' long, in the ground, deep enough that the ground stays a constant temp regardless of season. The PVC will enter near the base or floor of the building.

The idea is that as air heats it rises to the roof and is vented. The air flow out creates enough suction to draw cool air into the building from the underground PVC pipe, thus cooling the building. Very simple , non electrical solution to your heat problem. It might work best if the underground pipe is level or slightly angled down to the building as cold air moves down slope better as it is heavier than hot air.

I know you guys don't have A.C. Have you ever thought about running some geothermal tubes with a small fan to push the cooled air through them. It might take the edge off a little bit and help preserve your electronics! Love your channel, I've been a youtube subber for years now! Keep up the good work!
