Will the Coronavirus Restrictions Change the Way People Work?

While for many of us, especially those who are present on this platform, working from home high seem natural, many others have just discovered home-office due to the recent restrictions imposed by the authorities as a preventive measure against the spread of the coronavirus.

Surely, this is just a temporary phase, but does it have the potential to change the way people will work in the future? For those who have been tied to their desk for 8h a day, doing the same thing but from the comfort of their home must feel somewhat liberating to say the least.

Others might find this way of working boring in the long term as it certainly takes its toll on one of the greatest advantages of working in an office - socializing.

There are also those who might not find virtual work efficient due to different reasons. On the one hand, it does not provide the direct stimulus you get while working side by side with other people. It also lowers competitiveness which is a great motivation for some. Also, there are people who simply can't focus on working from home as they are always tempted to do something else (gardening, feeding the cat, washing clothes, you name it). It's hard to concentrate on work when you're at home and you can't see your agitated boss walking around, giving orders and talking on the phone.

However, if you are a well-organized and independent person, you will most probably grow fond of virtual work as it ensures a certain degree of freedom you will never get with a regular job that requires your physical presence.

Also, there is the undeniable advantage of not having to commute to and from work every day. This helps you save time and money and keeps all that traffic-related stress at bay.

All in all, there are both advantages and disadvantages to working from home, but the good part is that, once this crisis is over, people will have discovered another way of working.
