[Albatross]: Marriage for life or several years without land

All good and health!

I want to wish the flight of thought and the fulfillment of all desires. Do not be stingy in your dreams and then they will come to you faster.

Today we’ll talk about an unusual bird that has a lot to learn from a person. A sky wanderer also appears in Antarctica - this is a giant albatross.

I am not an ornithologist at all, I just love birds and am very curious. Albatrosses are very unusual birds, they have their own characteristics.

For some male albatrosses, it will take only 46 days to circumnavigate the globe!!!! (14 thousand miles). At least such cases are known.

Just imagine! Researchers attached special sensors to the birds to study their migration. It turned out that some individuals circle the globe twice! There are different birds in the photos, but it is very difficult to catch a perched albatross. They are in constant flight.

Nature gives everyone amazing opportunities and abilities. They must be used... Humans don't have wings like birds do. But there are other inner wings. How long would it take you to mentally circle the globe? Or our galaxy?

Let's return to the amazing sea bird - the albatross. The wingspan sometimes reaches 3.7 meters. The length of the bird is on average 1 meter 20 cm, weight - 8 kg. Pretty big bird!

To take off, the albatross takes acceleration and starts! And now attention! An albatross may not touch the ground for several years, only sometimes it sits on the water. The celestial wanderer flies 5500 km without landing. Amazing bird! Dynamic soaring (the ability to maintain a constant speed) helps the albatross not get tired in flight.

Albatross strikes me even more devotion to love for his soul mate. As a rule, these birds choose a pair for life. Only in the event of the death of one, the second is looking for a replacement. Both parents take care of the chick. Take turns flying to get food. Sometimes these flights are very long - up to 3000 km. Albatrosses live an average of 12 to 40 years.

Thank you for attention!

Sincerely, @r3benok.

And we complain when the next supermarket is not within 500m...

Just out of curiosity: how do they do it with brood care? In the air???

Und wir jammern, wenn der nächste Supermarkt nicht innerhalb 500m erreichbar ist...

Nur so aus Neugierde: wie machen die das mit der Brutpflege? In der Luft???

This is a good question:). Imagine, they are sometimes looking for a couple for 15 years! They nest on the shores of the Southern Ocean on the rocks. They have long mating dances with shouts and bows. They choose rocks not by chance, it is easier to take off there. But they never land on ships, it is difficult for them to take off.
Apparently, albatrosses need land only to prolong their kind in heavenly wanderings:)
