When I gaze into your eyes,
With such a fatal sadness,
With such an intimate dreaming,
I immediately think of the moonlight
Blessed by Portugal!
The same tone of sadness,
The same vague dreaming,
That binds my soul
To the celebrations of Nature
And to the sweet light of your gaze!
If someday, to my misfortune,
The sweet light of your ideal gaze
Should fail me,
Let Portugal not forget
To tell its moonlight
To bring, at night,
To the grave where I shall sleep,
That sadness, that pain,
That bitterness, that love,
That I read in your gaze!
