La Pervinca del Madagascar (Catharanthus roseus), appartenente alla famiglia delle Apocynaceae, è una pianta erbacea perenne originaria dell’isola di Madagascar. Oggi è coltivata in molte regioni tropicali e subtropicali del mondo per i suoi fiori ornamentali e per le sue proprietà medicinali.

È una pianta compatta che può raggiungere un'altezza compresa tra i 30 e i 60 cm; ha un portamento cespuglioso con fusti erbacei e flessibili. Le foglie sono di un verde intenso, lucide e di forma ovale, con una venatura centrale ben definita. La sua caratteristica principale sono i fiori che sbocciano in abbondanza: singoli, a cinque petali, di colore che va dal bianco al rosa al rosso, con una parte centrale di colore più scuro. La fioritura della pianta è prolungata, avviene per gran parte dell'anno, soprattutto in climi caldi.

La Pervinca del Madagascar è una pianta robusta e molto adattabile. Predilige posizioni soleggiate o leggermente ombreggiate, e resiste bene sia alla siccità che alle alte temperature, purché venga irrigata regolarmente. Cresce in terreni ben drenati, poveri o sabbiosi, ma si sviluppa al meglio in terreni ricchi di sostanza organica e mantenuti umidi, senza ristagni idrici.

Un aspetto importante di questa pianta è il suo utilizzo in medicina. Contiene alcaloidi, come la vincristina e la vinblastina, che sono usati nella medicina moderna per la produzione di farmaci contro alcune forme di cancro, come la leucemia. Tuttavia, la pianta è tossica se ingerita direttamente.

It is a compact plant that can reach a height of 30 to 60 cm, with a bushy habit and flexible, herbaceous stems. The leaves are a deep, glossy green and oval-shaped, with a well-defined central vein. The plant’s most distinctive feature is its abundant flowers: single, five-petaled blooms that range in color from white to pink to red, often with a darker center. The flowering period is prolonged, occurring throughout most of the year, especially in warm climates.

The Madagascar Periwinkle is a hardy and highly adaptable plant. It prefers sunny or partially shaded spots and withstands both drought and high temperatures well, as long as it is watered regularly. It grows in well-drained, poor or sandy soils, but thrives best in rich organic soil that is kept moist without waterlogging.

An important aspect of this plant is its use in medicine. It contains alkaloids such as vincristine and vinblastine, which are used in modern medicine to produce drugs for treating certain forms of cancer, like leukemia. However, the plant is toxic if ingested directly.
