Stonehenge is an ancient stone circle monument, cemetery, and archaeological site in Wiltshire, England, about 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. Though no definitive evidence exists as to what Stonehenge was erected for, it was most likely a sacred place and a statement of the power and riches of the chieftains, aristocrats, and priests who commissioned it; many of whom were buried nearby in the numerous barrows. It was presumably used for monitoring the Sun and Moon, as well as setting out the farming calendar because it was aligned with the Sun. Perhaps the location was dedicated to the world of the ancestors, which was apart from the world of the living, or it was a healing centre.

This prehistoric monument was constructed in stages: the first was an early henge monument established around 5,000 years ago, and the unique stone circle was completed around 2500 BC in the late Neolithic period. Many burial mounds were created nearby in the early Bronze Age. Stonehenge now forms the centre of a World Heritage Site, together with Avebury, with a rare concentration of prehistoric monuments.

Stonehenge was my last memory of England as I joined a stop-over tour on the way to Heathrow Airport. These memories were strongly etched in my mind as I am in awe how of the society at the time was able to build such a complicated and huge structure with limited tools and knowledge. The mystery of Stonehenge is a testament to the ingenuity of the past generation as well as a legacy for the present generation.
