Songkla city is the neighbouring city of Hat Yai. It is also a seaside town. One of the attractions of this town is the Samila Beach. On the beach is a statue of the Golden Mermaid – the key landmark of Songkla. The beach is beautiful but there is nothing special about the statue of the Mermaid.

The Samila beach and the Mermaid are listed on the websites as tourist attractions. That was why we decided to go and have a look. But, in my opinion, it was not worth the time and travel – just to see this ‘Mermaid’.

The story behind the mermaid, according to Thai folklore was this: A mermaid sat on a rock on the beach combing her hair on a starry night. A young fisherman showed up and frightened her. The mermaid fled into the sea. The fisherman waited for her to show up again, but the mermaid had disappeared – forever, never to be seen again.

There are pony rides on the beach for children – for a small fee of course.

The best time to go there would be in the evening when you can also take in the setting sun. Quite a lovely sight to behold.
