Genomics and the future of Healthcare

in #genomics6 years ago (edited)

It was in 1990 that the human genome project was initiated by the US government but with contributions from various countries including Japan, Germany and China. Over the period of 13 years, it would go on to map the entire genome of the human DNA. This means the entire source code that makes up the human being would be recorded

You see the entire human or animal and even plant body is made up of cells, each of which contain a nucleus. These nuclei contain genetic material that are in the form of biochemical molecules which contains, stores and executes all the information about every structural and functional protein that would go on to define the physical, physiological and even psychological characteristics of a person.

Every human being started as a single cell, the ova, which then proceeds, over time, and through various complex biogenetic processes to develop into the complete functional human being we see today. But what guides the cell in the process of differentiation into the various types of tissues we see in a normal adult human?. I mean, from the same single cell you get the hard and calcified tissue that makes up the bones, you also get the soft nervous tissues that makes up the brain and the spinal cord. Structurally and functionally, these tissues are dissimilar, and so are the other numerous tissues in the body, each with its peculiar structure and function, and yet, all come from one single cell.

How.

The answer lies in the nucleus of the cell. All the information the cell needs to differentiate and develop into the specific tissues in the body is stored in molecules of DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC acid. Some portions of this DNA contain information that can be used to create bone tissue, while others contain information that will produce nervous tissue. And so on.

Since Watson and Crick had proposed a structure for the DNA molecule in the 1950's, not much had been done by way of DNA research until the Human genome project.

Now the implications of this are revolutionary. A lot of genetic diseases can be traced to their origin and treated accordingly., mostly before they even begin. Diseases ranging from cardiovascular like hypertension and heart failure to neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease can have a more specific approach to treatment, through gene therapy. Even cancer research will see a brand new approach with very promising results.

That is why DNATIX has created a platform based on blockchain technology that will, hopefully, over time, become the largest genomic data reservoir on the planet. It is an ecosystem whereby the individuals involved can share their genomic data to be stored on the database, while still running a democratic system in which the ownership of the genomic data is still under the control of the owner, and the data would not be used unless with their permission.

Pharmaceutical companies and Healthcare researchers will b. Have access to a large variety of genomic data to work with, creating room for genetic tests to be performed and while offering clients the opportunity to get referrals to an appropriate solution provider for thier tested genetic conditions.

You see the people behind the Dnatix project understand that the future of Healthcare is indeed embedded within the nucleus of the cell in its genomic data. We are literally going back to the basics.

Dnatix also understands that the future of any form of transactions and data storage is the blockchain technology. By integrating the two, Dnatix will literally take healthcare into the future.
