Is dystopia possible in the 21st century?

in #future6 years ago

As time goes on, so does technology; so it is hard to believe that dystopias like the one George Orwell showed us in his book 1984 can exist. That's why I'm going to analyze below how likely it is that there could be one of you in the middle of the 21st century.

A dystopian society can be characterized by having an indoctrination of the masses, control and manipulation of information, use of a person or concept superior to what society must worship, everyone must think alike and whoever does not will be considered a threat to the system.
The 21st century is known for the computer revolution that has ended; the Internet has revolutionized the way in which information reaches us, so manipulating information is no longer as easy as before. Unlike 50 years ago the number of young people who can enter a university is much higher, the doors to education have raised the level of skepticism, blindly believing in a supreme leader seems difficult.
Thinking differently is not as chaotic as it was long ago, the world is full of people debating various issues such as abortion, religion, the role of women in society, which before were indisputable dogmas.

But...if we have the tools that help us become a free society, why are even those images of possible dictators, supreme leaders, fake news, and blind credibility of people hovering around our world? And I'm pretty sure these words will make you think of a country.
And this leads me to talk about how the problem lies mainly in us as a society, in how we educate to obey and not to question reality. As I said in the beginning, time and technology advance, but sometimes our thinking gets stuck in the past; that's why our hope is in education (both at school and at home), youth, and as an old Disney movie says, "Keep moving forward".
What do you think about this? Do you think it's possible to have dystopia in the 21st century? Do you think some already exist? Thanks for reading. See you soon.
