DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY: Not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, just different!

Cooking from Scratch

My partner and I have always cooked at home using raw ingredients. We are fortunate that we have the time to spend cooking and can avoid supermarket ready meals. The nearest we ever come to eating a ready meal at home is pizza, and even then we like to put on our own toppings. Occasionally we eat fast food if we are away from home (we are rather fond of Nando’s chicken or fish and chips!) but at home we are happy to slave away over a hot stove. Needless to say, we have never had a micro-wave oven.
We also eat a very wide variety of fresh foods: meat, fish, poultry, game and we regularly eat all the vegetables and fruit available to us in the supermarket. Here in the UK we are very fortunate to have such a wide choice, and it beats me why some people stick to such a narrow diet.
I’m also surprised when people say that such and such a food is good for you. So far as I’m concerned, all food is good for you! Most vitamins and minerals can be obtained from fruit and veg if you vary your diet as much as possible. While we love our food, we do not overeat and most of the time we much prefer to eat at home rather than in a restaurant.
It seems rather sad to me that the ready-meals section in our local food store seems to grow ever bigger, in response to public demand. Cooking is such fun, relaxing too, and it needn’t be too complicated or time-consuming. There are many meals that take less than half an hour to prepare, and you can get by with just a few basic techniques. Even if you only have the time to cook from scratch at the weekends, it is well worth making the effort in my opinion. Mother Nature is so bountiful, and if you accept her gifts and treat them with respect she will help us to stay healthy – the natural way.
