Bible Study Devotional: John 3:31-33. “He That Comes From Above Is Above All”

in #christian-trail7 years ago

31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

Here is more language that clearly establishes the preeminence of the Son of God in both the mind of John the Baptist and the mind of the Apostle John who is recording these words. The clear witness of both Johns is that Jesus comes from heaven, that he comes directly from God, from the dwelling place of God, to the earth. We have established previously that the name, “John” or “Yokhannon” means “grace of Yahweh.” Both Johns bore witness of the “gracious gift of God” coming down to this earth from heaven to deliver humanity from their sins!

Jesus is said here to be “above all.” The Apostle Paul says it better than I ever could in his letter to the Colossians; “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:16-18.

These verses demonstrate the extent to which Jesus is above all. He is above all because he created all. He is above all because all were created for him. He is above all because he existed before all. He is above all because everything is held together by him. He is above all because he is the beginning, the resurrected one and the ruler of all!

32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

Jesus is the one who has been there with God the Father. All that he had and has to teach is true. Will we receive his testimony? Will we accept it as truth? This was the test when Jesus was on the earth two thousand years ago and it is still the test today.

33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

Those of us who receive the testimony of Jesus, that he is the Son of God who came from God, the one who teaches the truths of God and who rescues us from the consequences of our sins, stake our present and our future lives on the truth of this one who is called the Messiah.

Those who receive his statements accept that he is above all, that what he says goes, because he has exclusive and complete knowledge of the full will of God the Father. We accept the basic premise that there is such a thing as “truth” in this world and that Jesus brings truth in its clearest form to humanity. We accept that he enlightens us and takes us from the kingdom of darkness, ignorance, foolishness and pride to the kingdom of light, knowledge, wisdom and humility through his words and his actions.

May the testimony of Jesus, the Word of God, shine bright throughout the world through the Scriptures and through the witness of his people!

Amen
