Open the eyes of my heart (3)

In this final instalment of the series, we will look at this prayer from a different angle. It is an awesome prayer to pray and when God answers you, life will never be the same. I hope you will pray it often and that you will encourage many to do the same.

People reject Jesus because they do not know who he is! Many things conspire to dilute or warp who we see him to be. This prayer, in turn, conspires to set you on a path towards a fuller revelation of Jesus.

Paul Baloche based the song that is our prayer on Ephesians 1: 17-18 that hold the words of another Paul’s prayer for the church in Ephesus.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, … (Eph 1:17-18 NIV)
The first part is about the revelation of Jesus we have been praying for. However, the second part leads you to an understanding of yourself for which Jesus is your only source. You need this more than you realize. Just read The Message Bible rendition of Paul’s words:
your eyes focused and clear so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for Christians, (Eph 1:18 MSG)
Just like we develop a warped idea of who Jesus is, we can develop a warped idea of who we are and what we are about. I think a better understanding of who Jesus is will lead you to a better understanding of who you are and what he intends for you.

I see so many people making bad choices because of how little or negatively they think of themselves. A wife accepting abuse as a deserved fate. An employee not applying for a deserved promotion. A young person pursuing valueless goals. Anyone accepting a mundane existence of mere survival. The list is endless.

Life is an exciting adventure when you follow Jesus. There is no limit to what he can do in you and through you. Your life in his hands has endless potential and who you are, what you have or can do has no bearing. It is all about who he is, what he can do and what he has. There is no greater life, no higher life, no more exciting life than the one found in him!

You and I need the understanding that this prayer will lead to. We need to see Jesus for whom he really is. And we need to

  • see exactly what it is he is calling each of us to do
  • grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for Christians
Do you want this understanding? Then pray with me as we conclude this series:

Open the eyes of my heart Lord

Open the eyes of my heart

I want to see you

I want to see you

To see You high and lifted up

Shining in the light of Your glory

Pour out Your power and love

As we sing holy, holy, holy

Your church may not be singing this song currently. That is very okay as numerous artists including Michael W. Smith and Hillsong have recorded it with great success. And you can find Paul Baloche himself singing it on YouTube here. It may help you to sing it as a prayer or to put the words up next to your mirror.

Do whatever it takes to make this prayer a cry of your heart. I am convinced of two things:

  • Your heavenly Father longs to hear it
  • His response to this prayer will have a life-changing impact on you
Thank you for joining me on this journey!
