Binance Exchange "Hacked" - Check Your Altcoin Balance ASAP!

In one of the odder exchange "hacks" to have been made public, the Binance cryptocurrency exchange appears was reported to have been hacked yesterday. Many users alt coins were liquidated at market, with some having their Bitcoin withdrawn and others having it used, oddly enough, to pump an obscure coin named VIA.

Initial suspicions were that only users using trading bots had been targeted, given only a small slice of customers seemed to be affected. This seemed plausible at first but was quickly proven inaccurate. The mobile app (Android/iPhone) was next up on the scapegoat list, but didn't seem to be the problem either.

Most hacks don't result in the pump of an alt-coin by 1000% (was higher on Binance).

Binance's CEO has since cleared up many of the details on Twitter. It appears users were fished in a very clever scheme. The website looked almost exactly like Binance owing to using some special characters that can barely be distinguished from the standard characters - think "umlauts." On top of that, once you signed in once through the portal and leaked your credentials, you were redirected correctly to Binance.com and would always be redirected in the future, even if you logged out. This reduced the chances that anyone would notice the future theft "in progress."

Once the attackers felt they had enough data compromised, they sprung the trap and attempted to cash out. We now know this was yesterday. However, this means this was not an exchange hack but simply a security incursion on the client side.

Remember - don't google or type in exchange addresses. Use bookmarks! They substantially reduce the chances of this happening to you.

There is good news if you were affected - Binance has reportedly already been able to quarantine and reverse the transactions, so nobody will actually incur any losses (save perhaps Binance itself) from this event. (Note: Reports of Binance is offering free crypto bonuses to customers on Twitter are probably a scam.)

Make sure you check your exchange account, so you can notify support and maximize your recovery chances if you have lost any funds. Check specifically your order history and withdrawal history.

How long does the 3k ETH give away lasts?

You are displaying greed, which is very dangerous in the crypto world. Be careful or you will definitely get burned. Lots of folks out there waiting for you. ;)

Yes, thank you!

Although I figured that out myself yesterday that it might not be sush a good idea after all...

It's probably another scam. I didn't look into it thoroughly.

Binance has handled this situation in a very professional way.... They have gained even more trust now...All crypto users need to be careful with phishing sites...

thats true. Binance is one of the best exchanges.

I do very good finance calculations @titanik

Agreed. They are rockin it. I'm feeling safer about leaving funds there in the future.

This market has been going down heavily and I fear that the FUD might push it down even further!

I hope you are wrong. the crypto world is very unpredictable

I like to think we're just setting up a very strong bottom here around 10k!

BINANCE IS NOT OFFERING FREE CRYPTO BONUSES FOR CUSTOMERS. IT IS A SCAM!
Scammers are using Twitter profiles with same name and profile picture.
If you check other post from Binance CEO, you will see that these scams occur very often.
You should edit your post to avoid people getting scammed.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'll upgrade that language from "sketchy" to "scammy". Thank you.

This is a very scary situation I hope same thing can't happen on Steemit

Steemit is not an exchange, and most Steem is locked into being powered up.

its a good thing that no one lost their money ,i really hope binace doesn't loose it's credibility

If anything, they've increased it with their cogent response to the issue.

It's not like you should be keeping huge amounts of crypto on exchanges in the first place. Make your buys and trades and put them in your wallets. I'm still happy to use Binance.

Binance now saying it was an API issue and they will reverse the sales and make everyone whole again!

Not the first half, but yes to the second half.

Nice article @lexiconical, binance.com did the right thing.

Sounds a bit like "steemiL.com" the site that steals your steemit password, then hijacks your account and spams people with phishing links and empties out accounts....
Read more in this post I wrote...
I suggest victims to report the crime to Malaysian authorities online, (this is where the fake-site is located) see my post...

Ah, well if they are anything like our Western authorities, I'm sure they'll "get right on that..."

I am sorry @lexiconical, I get where you are coming from, and that most people here are counterculture and they don't believe much in the government, etc etc...
But I believe this is the type of unserious attitude that might end steemit...
If we as a community don't take these things a bit more seriously, steemit is going to become famous as this weird shithole online where you can go and phish, spam, hack & scam unsuspecting victims without any repercussion...
