PSA: When using @ocdb, mind the beneficiary cuts of the dapps you're posting through

in #beneficiary5 years ago

It has come to my attention that there are a lot of users purchasing bids from @ocdb for certain posts that are posted through dapps, now even though I throw them a warning or letting them know it's usually cool since most dapps out there like steempress or d.tube only take a 10% beneficiary cut which is the same amount as the somewhat guaranteed @ocdb ROI so in a way it's +/- 0.

Lately though there's been a few users that have been using ocdb on some art posts and thanks to steempeak I noticed that @ntopaz was taking a 10%+5% cut on each of them. Now this is obviously okay as each dapp can choose their own beneficiary cut but what I found weird was that none of the users knew about this and obviously using our fully non-profit distribution bot were just losing rewards and their bids on these posts. Out of curiosity I went to check if it states on their website about the beneficiary since none of the few I asked about had any idea. There was nothing in the Faq but what I did find was this page, but let's just say that it's kind of hard to decipher what the percentages shown on their page actually mean (feel free to judge for yourself).

Again I'm not trying to hate on this project and I don't even know what exactly happens with the beneficiaries, maybe they are somehow brought back to the artists or the delegators or something (it really is hard to translate what their images even mean with no added text to these details) but I wish they would make it more clear as it seems many posting there are not aware of it and especially those that may be using bid bots, @ocdb or others onto the posts which just means they might be losing out on even more rewards percentage-wise than they realize.

So unless you're posting through steemit/steempeak/busy(when you click off the "share 10% of rewards with busy button", you're probably paying a beneficiary cut to the dapps and using @ocdb will most of the time mean it is for nothing. Since we have a queue so "promotion/visibility" is usually not a reason to use @ocdb it makes even less sense to use it on dapps that take a cut, unless you're trying to get the dapp's attention or bots that will front-run your bids, but that's a bit far fetched.

So just thought I'd let you know and hopefully projects will be a bit more open and obvious about these things cause if they seem like they're trying to hide these details it'll just make it look worse for them in the end.

If this is the first time you're hearing about @ocdb, check if you've been curated by @ocd in the past and made it onto our whitelist here, which would make you eligible to purchase 10% profitable bids for your OC content.

If people want to easily double check if they have been paying benefactors on their recent posts, they can check their feed on steempeak.com and hover over the payout information. Last Tuesday I coincidentally did some digging of my own and found that Steempress nowadays takes a 15% cut (check examples: https://steempeak.com/explore/created/steempress).

They seem to have it in their FAQ at least ^^

whoever reads those things anyway? :D

Well if you're constantly posting but only losing SP you might start to wonder. xD

Oh okay, wasn't aware of that change, but yeah thanks to steempeak I noticed this! You guys rock :3

we're doing the best we can to make everything Steem more easy and enjoyable :) To the moon!! (isn't that what you are supposed to say?)

When you guys gonna get some ads which share revenue with steemians or ways to tip brave to specific steem account pages? :D

I think that's really gonna set you apart.

We have been looking into the brave thing, but we are afraid we need a bigger user base to get that done. But it's on the list to research further anyway.
And the ads: @jarvie will be the best person to give some insights on that topic.

Well with the amazing new steem-engine features and the downfall of busy, I'm pretty sure you guys are getting a lot of new users! I know I am! I migrated here like 2 weeks ago :^)

That's always nice to hear. I hope you are right!! The reactions to our last big release have been super positive and that was super motivating to even do better :)

I think Steempeak is great in that respect because it shows the beneficiary cut below each post.

As to steempress, they made that very clear from day one when they launched, there's no free lunch 😊

Still not on the whitelist ^^

Also partiko and esteem could be used. They also don’t take a beneficiary.

I believe esteem does take 10% cut ...

You are right about esteem. Did forget about it.

Why do all these platforms take a cut of the post rewards like that? Maybe there is solid reasoning for it but seems like a money grab type thing to me personally. Id rather deal with some ads on their frontend than them take from my rewards.

Id feel less disgusted by it if it was optional and clearly so.

hah, yes, thank you for this very important PSA, cid <3

i think dapps should be more upfront about their costs, or else, it will create a feeling of authors being taken advantage of in the long run...

Imagine paying for a 10% RoI bot just to give away 15% away without noticing it! lol

Pretty sketchy practices by nTopaz if they are not properly telling their users what they take in beneficiaries.

Yeah I left a comment to @piotrgrafik the other day when I noticed it cause he usually goes for max bids, so instead of 120 steem bid giving him a profit of 12 steem he's losing 7.8 steem instead. (I think that's the math behind it: 120+12 then 132x0.85?) I suck at math.

I also kinda hope dapps are gonna adjust those percentages with HF21 or it's gonna get bloody... xD I bet many will "forget" for a long time.

They better stop taking beneficiaries and start upvoting their users more, makes it more profitable both anyways with 50/50 :^)

Tasteem does 10%, it's optional and visible. They don't allow bid bots and they have a whale sized upvote that generally covers at least 50%.
More sho follow thrir lead.

Tasteem does allow bidbots it just means your post gets disqualified from the contest if I understand it correctly. Then they still take a cut of your bidbot payout 😟

I guess they actually cannot prevent it, but you get some fairly obvious warnings. If you use bid bots twice with tasteem, thats on you.

However in all fairness, it would be quite easy for bid bots and @ocdb to ban votes for those tagged with busy, tasteem, etc. Or even with beneficiaries

Normal bidbots wouldn't do that, its a business for them, they couldn't care less if users lose more money to beneficiaries.

@Acidyo is doing a good deed to remind people but ultimately it's their call, maybe some people really want to promote their post...

This is very informative @acidyo specially for the newbies and those people who are unaware of it. Noted :D

I hope I don't misunderstand your posts (I am using translator to full understand).

Thank God, I have been in the @ocdb whitelist since a few months ago and I am very happy, finally I am there. Regarding the use of the @ocdb facility, I have been reminded by @khanza.aulia to making a post via steemit only, not with other Dapps, because they cut it too large for the rewards obtained by the user. Hope someday they make a consideration more better, because there a lot of people making a good post but not get much, then their movement too slow. Thanks for sharing this sir @acidyo.

Blessing

Thanks for clearing this out. I admire how busy.org states is clearly and gives an option to choose, I think this should be what the others should adopt, let it be the users choice to give 10% or not.

Thanks for this

But I dont like that every time the Check Box Is already ticked.

Steempeak best

Lol, the default is already checked, but atleast it can be unchecked and its not hidden.

Steempeak you can add beneficaries for everyone. Not only for Steempeak or busy. Completely voluntarily ;)
